Trading Gold? Empty Trading Gold?

I see all these topics about trading gold for EP. So, a newbie question:

How do you trade EP for gold? As far as I am concerned, you can't directly trade or gift gold or even put gold up for auction. So how do you do it?

you have the interested party put up ep in auction, then you bid on it with gold
