Combat System Empty Combat System

I'm fairly new to the game, but has anyone figured out the exact mechanics of the combat system damage-wise?

I'm assuming that damge is dealt linearly with attack, and hp is obvious, but what exactly does defense do(numerically, since obviously it makes your monsters survive longer). i.e. How much damage would 1000 attack monster do to a 1000 defense monster.
