Leveling before evolving? Empty Leveling before evolving?

New to the game. Just wondering if leveling cards to max before combining them adds a bonus to the base evo'd stats.

for example, Lvl 60 A + lvl 60 A = Lvl 1 A+ atk 2000 def 2000
Lvl 1 A + lvl 1 A = Lvl 1 A+ atk 1000 def 1000

Is this how it works or are the base stats of a combined A+ the same no matter what?
