Car Audio. Help me decide on this...

Post by Scratch102 on Tue Jul 23, 2013 9:29 am

2008 Passat. Using the Premium 7 OEM headunit (a 6-disc changer version of the base radio).

My steering wheel has buttons for everything, including bluetooth phone answering. Sadly they did not offer this option in the US until 2010 and it costs a stupid amount of money.

So I am looking at one of 3 routes to go to get bluetooth enabled in this car:

#1 - Kufatec / FISCON Bluetooth unit. This is an OEM+ add on to the car. You pull the radio, hook this up, run the microphone to the OEM location, reprogram the ECU and done. Calls come in and you see them on the dashboard, use the steering wheel to answer. Added bonus - also adds some new data screens to the dashboard like oil temp / boost pressure (turbo) / etc etc. Expensive. $350 to $450+ depending on the options.

#2 - China Copy. The OEM high end VW navigation headunit is a RNS-510 ($1500+) that also requires you to buy a bluetooth unit to enable it in the car. There are Chinese clones of this radio, it uses WinCE as the OS and has many aftermarket features like a backup camera, DTV, GPS, etc etc. It can be tweaked and programmed to operate like an OEM unit, but it will never actually look like a real one. Reviews go from "OMG GREAT" to "meh" based on audio quality and the amount of time needed to tweak it to behave the way you want it. These have been out for years and have gotten much better, and for the price...hard to beat. Approx $350 or so.

#3 - Aftermarket. Or I can just go after an aftermarket unit. I would prefer to stay in the range of the above items, so that would remove GPS from the unit (I have a Garmin with lifetime maps) and the audio quality from something like Pioneer would be great, but it will be non-OEM and could attract attention to my car. I'm not terribly worried about that (honestly that is what insurance is for) but it is just another option I am trying to sort out.

So... what would YOU do?

Scratch, which garmin do you have? some of them do have support for bluetooth and hands-free answering for calls. I know the previous model I used did (but I can't remember what it was lol), and the Garmin Nuvi which I use currently definitely has support for hands-free.

I don't get most of the technical details you're talking about; but most of them seem like pretty major operations (removing the radio, wiring things behind etc etc...) compared to just getting one of those little GPS 'bricks' you can mount on a vent and just need to attach a charger to the cigarette lighter.

That's what I would do Very Happy

Garmin nüvi 1350LMT

Pretty basic, and yeah it is on one of the little vent mount clips so it isn't on the windscreen. No BT in it though.

Most of the steps to add BT to my car require pulling the radio anyways, and I am totally capable of doing the work, just so tired from life in general. Having a hard time deciding the best route to take.

Also, why are you not in Palringo? ...and Larry should weigh in on this, after the other tech help he's gotten. LOL

 Oo

that's weird that yours doesn't have bluetooth...

the one I have has it, but I don't know the model number....

maybe yours has it, i think it is in one of the settings menus or extras where you can change the car icon, i don't remember that well since I haven't used it in a really long time, but I'm pretty sure I've used it before and that it was pretty hard to find in general...
