TLDR: plugging computer into 40in tv screen, everything looks stretched. what do I do?

Bit of background information; bought a condo recently, there was a 40inch Samsung flat screen which the previous owners didn't want to remove; and thus offered at the estate sale. Nobody bid on it so I received it at a massive discount (among other things, some of which were free)

It is ideally mounted in a room/position such that I would like to use it as my monitor for a home office.

Previously, I used a 27inch Sceptre lcd monitor (I still have it, and I would absolutely recommend it as a product for anybody looking for a highly affordable decent quality monitor; and that worked out pretty well.

My problem is as such; the 40inch Samsung can absolutely be HDMI connected to a computer and display the screen; however the resolution even at maximum 1920x1080 seems to be too small, and everything is rather obviously stretched (fat pixels). I understand that 27 > 40 diagonal is essentially doubling of screen area, but is there anything I can do about this? It's absolutely usable as is; it just looks stretched, and fine details and pictures look blurry on this screen where they are perfectly sharp on others.

I would take a screenshot to demonstrate what I'm talking about; but the screenshots I take are normal sized inside the computer; and only look huge and stretched when I have the Samsung plugged in; and I have attempted to take photographs of computer screens in the past and those usually end up being incredibly blurry in general so I don't think that would really be helpful in diagnosing the issue here.

the best frame of reference I have on hand is this; on my normal screen; my avatar on these forums is 1.4in x 1.4in. on the Samsung, it's 2.7x2.7
(measured with ruler)

also one weird thing; movies seem to play perfectly fine and in good definition (no fat pixels/stretching)

Does anybody have experience with resolving an issue such as this? any and all help or advice would be appreciated!

Assuming I've located the correct laptop, you appear to have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M. Assuming you have updated graphics/video/display drivers, you should have access to NVIDIA Control Panel (on Windows 7, you can access it from the right click menu on the desktop). From within the control panel, select "Display > Adjust desktop size and position". I'm not sure what to tell you to do exactly from there, but that should be the right place. If the "Aspect Ratio" radio button under Scaling isn't selected, I'd give that a try first.

Few things to look at:

Disable or reduce the "Auto Motion Plus" effect from the TV's menu. (looks like the 6300 series may have a default refresh rate that 'enhances' it to 120Hz could be causing some blur)

Sounds like the 6300 series can only do 1920x1080 is the largest resolution the tv will do in HD, and the best resolution your MSI will do.

Trying to figure out what the main issue is, I'm wondering if the previous owners messed with the settings of the TV...possible best first step is to try a factory reset:

my nvidia control panel doesn't have a display setting. I adjust resolution/output/border scaling/3d/etc... through an intel graphics and media control panel

I was suspicious that this might be as good as it gets; but don't get me wrong, it's not really bad by any measure, just a little blurry when looking at high def images. text is perfectly readable just not as sharp as I am used to; and movies work perfectly fine.... (I think there's some special pre-sets or interaction between the tv and the computer that makes it good for movies (also the tv remote can control the computer volume when the computer is plugged into the tv)), I will certainly try to disable auto motion plus, and see if that helps decrease blur at all; less is always better.

Thank you!
