Defense formation tactics!

Post by Savoir on Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:10 am

With the new arrival of defense forms, I've decided we should discuss how we go about baiting people to attack us. Personally I keep an A+ team out for attacking and I have a AA+m(20) team for defense. I'm able to pick who I attack carefully now and I should be able to gain honor this way. That is, if I keep this secret to myself... whoops!

What is your tactic?

Eventually I plan on running a psycho form under my sin guild so that I can trick people further Wink

What if, the people you pick out, secretly have an AA+ def form too :O

You're going to have to outsmart your opponent from now on. Know when he/she is most likely trolling, and be cautious.

On the battle screen, does it display the opponents main formation or their defensive formation? I had a second part to my question, but that girl won't stop flapping her arms and it's really distracting.

lol, cpeagle, can't you tell that it's robin in that post(or a look alike, but i really don't think it's a mere look alike, i think it's the real deal. at least it's good to know that the angle on her profile pic isn't intended to hide her real looks because most of society would think her ugly(no offense intended, i just know that girls that are too self conscious of whether people find them attractive or not use those strange angles to hide the truth)).

properly on topic, though, i just put some random monsters together when i want a trick form, not that it's working too well, people can see i'm ranked in the top 200 overall, and fairly active as my level and honor do change.

as far as attacking people goes, i usually get suspicious if the bp is too low, like it could only be a single monster or something. normally, people with low end psycho brutes, covert crawlers, or other similar low end forms tend to not have realized that they can now run a defense form or are simply too poor to afford a halfway decent team in it's place.

Re: Defense formation tactics!

Post by larry378 on Sat Mar 02, 2013 1:25 pm

I was actually wondering about all this yesterday, and Mythic of Adrenaline Rush gave me some pretty good advice which I think I'll pass on.

Initially I was using something along the lines of "let me put my favorite "fancy" monsters in main form; hot chicks, cool critters (stuff which doesn't really make a real formation, but looks nice)

did not work out all that well for me.

To which Mythic raised several good points.
1. C/Bs in a high level formation is a red flag (did they quit? or more likely are they baiting?)
2. The higher level/ranked you are; the more suspicious it is. ESPECIALLY if you have recent wall posts so it looks like you are still active, and thus MUST be baiting
3. Use a 'believable' form. Unless you're trying to look like you quit The other baiting option is to pretend to be dumb. So put up those A+ sin winged demons or wyrms or brutes. Covert crawlers without agility, heck use the 80bp AA form. These are all "real" formations that people do use. and you would be surprised how many people really do use them!#
4. Mythic didn't say this, someone else did (I can't remember exactly who, the palringo seems to auto-delete old conversations) but they said something along the lines of "nobody is going to attack those wyrms" which leads to another interesting point: carefully consider the market value of your main formation. If someone has a display form of 5 vics, you can bet that they are rich enough to have a 'real' form that is pretty powerful. *

#the thing to consider about this though is relative rank position. When trying to get honor at lower levels; attacking people in the overall rank 1000-300 range, there really are people who are using these as their "real formation". Once you're attacking people on page 1, if you see one of those forms, you can make a pretty safe bet that it's bait.

*the flipside of this is to take a careful look at their team, sometimes high value monsters can be a terrific indicator of a poor formation. I can't tell you how many times while I was climbing rank I would hit people who had an Anna backed up by a pretty poor form; as it was obvious they blew all their money on the Anna and the rest of their form is just A demons with deficient skills. Single AA with 4As is usually an indicator of "safe to attack" because they are probably trying to show off their one valuable monster at a hit to their form effectiveness.

anyhow, the moral of the story is: use a feasible but inferior formation. agility-less winged A+ forms are a good choice. I am currently using sin winged brutes as my 'main form', well I will be once the event ends, I'd like to give my clanmates some attack power for the event if they happen to draw my name from the assist button.

I have a Green Flash Soruluna as a leader of my bait team along with some other low bp AA's and one A which together happen to have a bp total of 69, lol. It wasn't planned but now that's the way I keep it.

I guess it is a different approach below lvl 80... I just have a C+ or B+ in my main and get hit anywhere from two to a record 8 times a night.

Trying to sell things so I've got a Psycho Brute team of A's in my main form (WWSP, SDS, Fex, Inos, Deceit) with 'formation for sale' and yep, someone *just* attacked me.

I could probably have 3 slinkys and an A-10 Warthog in my formation and someone would attack. *shrug*

If you had an A-10 Warthog in your formation, I would attack you just to see how badly I would get pwned. And also to see how OP the A-10 would be.

My iPad account is Covert, level 75. It gets attacked about four times more than my main (Sin 85). I noticed this more than usual today, because I left my event/bait formation up (4 C/+ and swapped out Dahlia leader for a Carbuncle) and left for work.

Came back and saw that I forgot to set my defense form to defense. Doh! 4 losses, -100k. Sad Can only revenge one per hour max, because I'm trying to hit the next bonus. Got 2.5k back from the 1st guy.

They must have all been like, lol, Carbuncle gold!

Oh well.

I'm running a level 1 rank A covert Mystic formation and am getting plenty of attacks. I love the new battle system. Except for the fact that since I'm only level 100 they took out all the high level players from the battle finder. I liked finding those level 170's and slaughtering them.

Interesting to note, incidentally all the players attacking me happen to be clanless, however 2 were able to beat me, one after 2 tries. Still that's very little compared to the amount of wins I'm getting. Smile

They're not clanless; for some reason, A Team doesn't want us to see clan info when we look at the revenge screen.

When they first added the ability to check the formation of those who attack us we could see their clan. Tapping their clan then tapping back took us back to their wall, allowing us to post comments on it. Next thing you know, we can no longer see their clan. Draw your own conclusions. I think for some strange reason they don't want us to have access to the wall of those we fight or who fight us. I honestly don't get it.

because complaining about progs, or wall spamming with offensive content in general was getting out of hand.

Remember, we may be having civilized conversations, friendly clans, collaborative alliances etc here... but don't forget the large playerbase of horomonal teenagers who see this (and in-fact anything else) as a dick-measuring competition. I'm glad this at least cut down on some of the endless torrent of "nice form n00b", "ur team sux", "i facked ur mum", "lol u homo" etc etc... I mean it's kind of funny the first time, until you realize it's not being done ironically or sporadically but indeed the primary medium of conversation for troglodytes.

I can't get people to attack me. I'm lv 62 and I'm trying to lure them in with a 1x combo made up of really popular monsters and a weak AA as the leader. Those are typically the people I try to fight cuz I they typically aren't bluffing and i can beat them with my 2nd string (beez, dev abys, 2 face, balrog, and ripper 5x, 61k, 88bp - awesome in this event). Perhaps it's my record of 600W-21L and 11W-2L. Do you think someone would give me stuff if I let them beat me for honor? What do you charge for that? How do you ensure delivery? Maybe I should just change my profile comment to some sort of 'your mother taunt' in an attempt to 'bait' people with their phone in one hand and a ruler in the other.

I can guarantee that nobody with at least half a brain is going to pay someone to change their formation so they can attack them for honor.

you have what? 15k honor tops (600x25 assuming maximum yield every single battle you've done). If somebody is trying to get honor, they can go attack literally anybody in overall rank. rank 1000 is 16.8k honor currently, so anybody on rank is far more visible, and likely to be happened upon by someone looking for honor points than your account; because if you are looking for honor, you look on overall rank.

Anyways; about the best way to invite attacks? the consensus thus far appears to be using a deficient formation.
As long as you stay away from the established A teams with agi: Sin Demons, Sin Wyrms, Sin Beasts, Psycho unwinged Brutes, Psycho demons, Psycho creations, Covert Beasts, Covert Wyrms. and reasonable AA teams (e.g. a species combo AA team is a 'reasonable' A team, having 3 casts and 2 planet wyrms is not a 'reasonable' A team); and make the team somewhat believable as a formation which someone who could not afford a real formation would use (e.g. species combos without agility, weaker combos with agility; covert crawlers, psy winged brutes, the 80bp aa team).

If your formation is both weak and believable, people will be likely to attack.
If it is strong (established A and AA teams), or unbelievable (e.g. a carbuncle and 2 banished dragons, or more commonly oh look this guy is ranked in the top 50 overall and he just has a B monster up, I wonder if he quit?); more people will be unwilling to attack due to anticipation a loss from the displayed formation, or certainty that it must be a trap because it looks fishy

Re: Defense formation tactics!

For some reason, which I can not explain, people like to attack formation with the prog. I have A+ prog with 4 C+ and getting attack 10 times a day. If I am the one who attacking, one formation I would avoid now is the one with prog. I'd figure that anyone who has a prog can afford prog will have some what good enough defense team so I should not take my chance (especially during battle event).

So if you want anyone to attack you, put up formation with prog. It is like light bulb for moths.

One reason could be to prevent people from farming for gold. That's what I would do if a player kept holding onto a lot of gold. I wonder why it can't just display the clan name and leave it unclickable.

Read the post I just quoted. Because when you can get back to that player's wall you can choose to attack them again, so if you wanted to farm you would just try to keep that player in your battle log.
